Five days of alpine passes end, on day 5, with something the route hasn’t offered once yet: a boat ride.
An island palace that was never finished
Herrenchiemsee sits on Herreninsel, an island in Lake Chiemsee reachable only by boat — a deliberate change of pace after five days spent almost entirely behind the wheel. King Ludwig II of Bavaria built it in direct homage to Versailles, modeling the interior specifically after the Hall of Mirrors, and the palace remains genuinely striking today for a reason that has nothing to do with completion: Ludwig died in 1886 before it was finished, and the unfinished sections sit alongside the completed ones as a real, physical record of a project cut short mid-ambition.
Why it works as a change of pace, not a detour
After a week built around mountain passes and alpine altitude, a boat crossing to an island palace is a genuinely different kind of experience rather than simply another stop — no engine, no driving line to think about, just water and an approaching building that took shape over decades and was never quite finished. It’s a deliberate contrast to everything the previous four days asked of a driver, and most guests describe it as a welcome one specifically because it’s so different.
Closing the loop
The drive back to Munich is where day 5 becomes a genuine finale rather than just the last item on a schedule: car handover happens at Block House, covered in more depth in the Munich food guide, followed by dinner and a night out shaped by a private guide’s local knowledge rather than a fixed plan. The route ends in the same city the fleet handover opened it in five days earlier — a real structural close, not an arbitrary stopping point.
